Title Understanding the Use of Tangible User Interfaces through Videogames
Authors Luis A. Guerrero, Pablo Cordella, Sergio Ochoa
Publication date 2011
Abstract During several years, the development of traditional videogames
has involved the design of two main components: the gameplay and the eye
candy. The gameplay involves the game rules and the eye candy deals with all
user interface aspects. Recently game designers have incorporated the
?user interaction? as a third design element to consider when developing
this type of product. Through the use of traditional videogames, this paper
explores the impact that the design of user interaction aspects has on the
users? experience and performance. In order to do that we developed an
augmented glove, which allows users to utilize a tangible user interface
(TUI) to interact with traditional games. It represents an alternative to
the typical graphical user interfaces (GUIs) used by gamers. Two well-known
classic games were adapted to be used through a TUI. These games were tested
using the TUI and the GUI to see the impact that the change of interaction
paradigm produces on the users? perception and performance. Based on the
obtained results the article hypothesizes on the possible impact of using
TUI to interact with other systems, such as TV on demand, home security
systems or homecare monitoring systems.
