Abstract Counting on software product specifications is essential
to evolve these systems in future projects. Some of
these specifications, e.g., product or project scope definitions, must be
understandable to non-technical stakeholders because they must validate and
agree on them before using them in product development. Unfortunately, these
specifications tend to utilize technical nomenclature that limits the
participation of customer team members in several activities. In previous
work, the authors showed that canvas-based specifications can address this
limitation. However, such a proposal was never evaluated in industrial
settings. Therefore, this paper reports on a field experiment that examines
the impact of canvasbased specifications in three agile evolution projects,
involving 19 members of the development team and six participants on the
customer side. The study evaluated whether these specifications help
stakeholders, especially non-technical stakeholders, understand and monitor
the scope of projects, and whether they support shared understanding between
customer and development team representatives. The results indicate that
these specifications more clearly capture the current and planned status of
a product throughout its development or evolution. Consequently, it helps
increase the engagement of the customer team and improve the collaboration
between customers and developers.
